Pipe Bedding Zones Explained

Proper pipe bedding is divided into three zones, each serving a specific structural purpose:

Why Proper Bedding Matters

Flexible pipe (HDPE, PVC) depends almost entirely on soil support for its structural integrity โ€” the pipe and surrounding soil work together as a system. Under-bedded pipe deflects, cracks at joints, or fails under traffic loads. Even rigid pipe (concrete, clay) needs proper bedding to prevent point loading and cracking.

Bedding Material Selection

Typical Spec Requirements

Most municipal specs require 6" (150mm) minimum bedding below the pipe and haunching to at least the pipe springline. ASTM D2321 and CSA B182 provide standard installation requirements for buried flexible pipe. Always check project specs โ€” they override generic guidelines.
